Emily-Jane Hillman: ‘Health Warning: Only Revisit the Past Through Art’

Audio Description

There are 3 pieces of art that form a visual narrative of the process of healing from mental, physical and emotional trauma to rebirth and renewal through the artistic process.

1. A 15 inch square canvas painted flesh coloured red and that has been slashed horizontally numerous times. Through the gaps tea stained nappy liners that suggest layers of skin protrude slightly here and there with the word ‘received’ stamped on them in blood red. Elsewhere empty mental health medication packets protrude through all the slashes. There are lots of them jumbled and stuffed through the slashes.

2. A 15 inch square pink painted box that is 3 inches deep and has a glass face framed by the pink painted wood. A rope pattern protruding from the wood with a marks a border between the glass and the frame. Inside the box has a soft backing that is covered with tea soaked nappy liners reminiscent of skin. The word ‘paid’ is stamped all over the liners. On top of this, lying at the centre of the box are two red rubber covered spoons whose round parts face outwards. These depict ovaries. Attached is a red and blue rubber covered fabric uterus. Chains soaked in multi coloured paint reminiscent of tubes and visceral parts of the body surround the sculptured uterus and ovaries.

3. A wooden board 14×16 inches that has been covered with poetry that has been written in burgundy fabric markers onto scraps of cotton fabric soaked in tea. The text covers the board. On top of this and mostly obscuring the text, are further tea stained nappy liners reminiscent of layers of skin. On top of . the liners, a number of eyes and lips and mouths have been drawn in coloured fabric markers onto scraps of cotton fabric. The marks have a plastic like effect. Further liners are layered on top through which scraps of antique letters protrude. At the corners and partially obscured, several dates can be seen several inches high 1975, 1996, 2009, 2011, 2013. A goats head partially obscured with the word ‘scapegoat’ can also be seen slightly obscured by the liners ‘skin.’ The words ‘ I can see clearly now the rain has gone,’ and ‘you being the rain’ can be seen at the top right of the artwork.

Jo Munton: ‘Always Leave Them Wanting More’

Audio Description

The screen start with the words always leave you wanting more. The saying then cuts to an old-fashioned stage. With a man and a woman answering from the right drinking wine in a celebratory way. The stage curtains open and we go to a close-up of the stage where an egg falls onto the stage gets larger and then breaks to reveal a rooster the rooster then gets bigger and bigger and starts to pick the stage full stop the rooster vent turns into a t-rex dinosaur then into a dragon breathing fire and walks off stage a flame appears on the stage and from the flame a phoenix like bird rises from it and flies around in circles. The phoenix then changes into a lady on a telephone in a burlesque costume still with feathers waving her right hand. The words you want more appear and then cuts back to the lady who has has made a hole in her chest and starts to pull out her organs and waves them in the air air and wipes her forehead with her blooded hand

Enillydd/Winner – Arty Jen Jo: ‘Emerging From The Raging Seas’

Audio Description

This video, was done in our garden, on the grass, in a rectangle shape, However, I recorded, the introduction, in my Study at home, using the stand alone lamp as a spot light. Behind me there is a wooden door, and my head rest which I use, to control, the powered wheelchair. I have got brown hair with grey streaks. I am wearing my reading glasses and I got a light blue, polo-neck on, and a light blue, fleece on top. In the film, itself, I have got an electric, blue top, on, with grey walking trousers. On my feet, I am wearing blue and black trainers. I am lying on the lawn and my husband, who is with me, is wearing a light green, dusty jumper, with grey, corduroy trousers., and he has got bare feet. He takes my glasses off, since they were coming off anyway. We make some dance moves to a piece of background music called Blackbird, which I taught myself to play. He lies beside me and then he sits behind me, to get me sitting up, to move me backwards and forwards, and side to side, with my arms open wide. There are hedges and bushes around us. He lies me down again, and I turn onto my left side, while I, pull some grass up, with my right hand. He gives me a kiss on the cheek, then he leaves me on my left side, facing the camera, as the video ends.

Giant Saint David led a Pilgrims Welcome

Giant St David led a Pilgrims Welcome on 8 May 2022 at 3pm in Pembrokeshire’s smallest city of St Davids.

Crowds joined the procession led by a giant Saint David, Small World Theatre’s new articulated puppet, and welcomed into St Davids Cathedral’s grounds by choirs singing music with an international flavour arranged by Span Arts. The party greeted the Ancient Connections’ Creative Camino artists as they complete the last leg of their pilgrimage journey.

The Ancient Connections project is a cross-border partnership between Pembrokeshire County Council, Wexford County Council, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and Visit Wexford. The partners are working collaboratively on an exciting arts, heritage and sustainable tourism project funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales co-operation programme.

Small World Theatre will co-create two outdoor events, bringing theatre and spectacle to this unique, collaborative project.

Eileen Harrisson

In Eileen’s Words:

“I’m an artist originally from Co. Down, Northern Ireland, currently living and working in North Wales. I particularly enjoy the rhythms of hand stitch, and, also writing poetry and music, I am interested in developing the symbiotic relationship between stitch, sound, and word. Earlier this year, I put on my PhD Exhibition A Sorrowful Healing in the School of Art Gallery, Aberystwyth University and, currently writing my thesis, this will, when finished, complete the work for my doctorate. After this, I will look forward to once more exhibiting my textile work and installations in galleries here in Wales and beyond.”
