Song of the Trees

A unique symphony led by the rainforests of Wales.

Launching for the Summer Solstice 2022, CÂN Y COED Rainforest Symphony empowers a new voice for our fragile ecology, inviting audiences to connect with the environment through a unique collaboration with nature, where for the first time, the rainforests of Wales sing out from beneath the bark. Hearing impaired, environmental sound artist and composer Cheryl Beer, has spent the last year working with the ancient rainforests of Wales, composing music led by the vascular systems of four remaining fragile enclaves. Her work reunites ancient Celtic grounds that would once have been joined together under the soil, by the fine feathery threads of mycelium fungus, as one magnificent rainforest.

By repurposing hearing aid and sensitive biomedical sound equipment, Cheryl has collated biorhythms created by conductivity deep within trees, ferns and moss, using these readings to compose CÂN Y COED Rainforest Symphony, unearthing previously unheard conversations within nature, where every note played is led by the ancient trees, fern and moss, themselves. Through her ground breaking arts & technology fusion, Cheryl’s unique way of composing music is raising awareness of our globally significant eco-system

LILLY [detail] | JAMIE GALLAGHER [typ01134]

Exhibiting as part of UNDOD @ Blackwater Gallery

Our first emerging artist exhibition of 2022

Part of a diverse and powerful figurative collection from Gallagher, presented at Blackwater as part of UNDOD.

Painting predominantly in oils, Gallagher’s work explores the concept of ‘identity’

The raw physicality of painting and a deep connection with the materials and tactility of the process feed the work. From heavy impasto oils and raw, textured linens to delicate gold leaf and bleeding inks, each mark is instinctive.

LOVE IN EVERY PORT [detail] | IAN MACKENZIE

Exhibiting as part of UNDOD @ Blackwater Gallery

Our first emerging artist exhibition of 2022

Taken from an incredibly detailed collection of oil paintings by Ian Mackenzie. Exploring the themes, culture, and narratives of the Welsh landscape and heritage. Exhibiting as part of UNDOD at Blackwater Gallery.

An artist based in South Wales, Mackenzie works in rich detailed oils on canvas. He has a unique eye for colour and precision and as such many of his paintings represent a photorealism style.

Ians influence to paint comes from the study of the subject, the emotion involved and the interaction with the surrounding environment.

DOOR 2 [detail] | CHRIS POMPA

Exhibiting as part of UNDOD @ Blackwater Gallery

Our first emerging artist exhibition of 2022

Part of a collection of mixed media works from Chris Pompa. Including assemblage, decoupage, and found art. Presented in an array of both large and small scale forms at Blackwater as part of UNDOD.

“My motivation is to reinterpret the world and everything in it as it’s experienced within my own imagination.

I am inspired primarily by colour and secondly by the rhythms I create between those colours and their forms. I work largely in an abstract style, due to its freeing and cathartic application, often not knowing where or when a piece will end. I call this process ‘no form only expression’ as I work on an intuitive level with no sketching or planning beforehand. Only after the completion of a piece will I attempt to understand its visceral journey.”

Through creativity and meaning-making, Well Wagon provides a safe space for everyone, including vulnerable members of the public, enabling collaboration while sharing creative coping mechanisms.

Well Wagon is a project led by artists Anna Amalia Coviello and Beth Smith, two Creative and Therapeutic Arts practitioners that share the same passion- which also lays the foundation of their manifesto:

* We believe in everyone’s creative potential
* We believe in the healing power of the arts
* We believe that the arts should be accessible to everyone

Well Wagon will be providing a crafting activity responding to the work at UNDOD, supporting the viewers’ experience of the exhibition through their own means of expression while consequently aiming to merge and unify with the artists’ vision.

National Theatre Wales

These are uncertain times for us all. As a national company, we are deeply aware of our role in supporting, enabling and nurturing the performance sector around us as well as offering the people of Wales the chance to connect to the stories that can unite us in shared experiences while we are kept apart. We know this is a hard time for many of us, but if you are able to consider making a donation to help us continue our work, it would be hugely appreciated. Click HERE to be added to our e-newsletter.

The nation of Wales is our stage.
We collaborate with people and places to make extraordinary theatre that inspires change. From the intimate to the epic, our work is powerful, brave and unexpected. Rooted in Wales, with a global outlook, we are the English-language national theatre of Wales.
National Theatre Wales has staged more than 80 inspirational productions in locations all over Wales, the UK, internationally and online since March 2010.
We usually operate from a small base in Cardiff’s city centre, but we work all over the country and beyond, using Wales’ rich and diverse landscape, its towns, cities and villages, its incredible stories and rich talent as our inspiration.

More Than A Number Symposium & Virtual Tour

More Than A Number is an exhibition which looks to explore our thinking of an Africa caught between modernity and tradition, and how different cultures can produce meaning through images. It invites the audience to engage with the exceptional and thought-provoking work of 12 photographers from Africa. And encourages us to look deeply and clearly into the face of the individual in front of you and engage in a conversation. As Elbert Hubbard wrote, “If men could only know each other, they would neither idolise nor hate”.

View a virtual tour of the exhibition here.

Plethu: Affricerdd Connections

‘Plethu: affricerdd’ is a series of short films commissioned by NDCWales and Tŷ Cerdd fusing original music and dance from across Wales and giving platform to music artists of African descent.

This unique collaboration gives artists the chance to explore film-making as a new skill and medium for their combined artforms.

Connections’ shows different responses to living in the city of Cardiff.

Dancer, Idrissa Camara has set movements in response to music featuring energetic, percussive rhythms, bolon taps and field recordings of traffic taken near where Composer Eric Martin Kamosi lives in Cardiff.

What can be seen here is effected by what can be heard and seen in the Cardiff.
