The Long Now Footsteps

For over twenty years, I’ve been extremely lucky to have collaborated on many AV projects with acclaimed electronic music artist Richard Norris.

He has an incredibly unique skill and passion to search out and realise electronic music ideas that always push the envelope. The Long Now project was a prime example of his desire to experiment and featured a collaboration between himself and acclaimed Icelandic opera singer Finnur Bjarnason. Fusing electronic sounds, strings and Finnur’s incredible voice, the music that they created earned them development funding from the PRS Society. Because of this, Richard invited me to shoot a series of visual shorts to accompany the music they had recorded and so in Spring of 2018 I found myself in Iceland with the music of The Long Now in my ears but without much of a “visual plan”. other than i had to shoot the sequences on just a small, lightweight DSLR Camera or on my iPhone. All I knew was that I wanted the limitations these devices placed on me to force me to think about how to capture a mood and atmosphere that the music deserved. Luckily, I had the landscapes of Iceland as a backdrop to kick things off but there was still a need to think outside the box in realising the ideas that I developed.

The three visual shorts featured on this page all come with very different visual approaches and stylistic ideas to fit the music. The one thing that unifies them is that they were all shot on my iPhone using just the FilmicPro app.
