Maniffest / Hijinx

Members of Hijinx Academy and National Youth Theatre of Wales (NYTW) recently returned to live in-person theatre devising, as they co-created a new inclusive work in partnership. Coming together in-person for the first time since the start of social distancing restrictions, the 8 young people took part in a four-day project full of creativity and stagecraft. Under the guidance of Ben Pettit-Wade (Creative Director, Hijinx), cast members developed an original piece of theatre based upon the ideas and stories suggested by the members themselves.

Milky Peaks (Trailer)

In the bosom of Snowdonia nestles the town of Milky Peaks: charmingly Welsh and gleamingly pebble-dashed. It’s a great place to live. Mostly.

Dewi, the fabulous hotel receptionist, just came out and yearns to be special. The Mother loves Wales and her family, if only they knew she was there. Drag queen Pariah Carey’s drowning her past in absinthe with a swarfega chaser; while Linda runs the Arts Centre with an iron fist, terrified of putting on something weird. And Alun John, rugby club legend and corrupt millionaire landowner? He just wants everyone to be happy.

It’s a normal Welsh town.

But when it’s nominated as “Britain’s Best Town” by a dark, shadowy organisation, everything it stands for risks being lost. Can its soul be saved?

A dazzling new musical written by and starring acclaimed Welsh writer/composer Seiriol Davies, reuniting with the team from How To Win Against History. Expect fast-paced humour, power ballads, sharp choreography and catchy numbers that will stick right in your head.

The perfect night out for the musicals or comedy fan!

Tremolo

Drama bodlediad yw Tremolo wedi’i chynhyrchu gan Theatr Illumine mewn partneriaeth â Pharc Geneteg Cymru a Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, gyda chefnogaeth y Gymdeithas Geneteg. Wedi’i hysgrifennu gan y dramodydd Lisa Parry o Gaerdydd, sydd hefyd yn Gyd-gyfarwyddwr Theatr Illumine. Mae’r podlediad pwerus hwn yn rhoi mewnwelediad clir i’r cwestiwn a ddylid cael profion geneteg ai peidio, a sut mae un teulu’n ymdopi â’r diagnosis allai fod yn cuddio yn eu genynnau.

Meddai Lisa Parry; “Mae teuluoedd ledled ein cymunedau’n gorfod gwneud penderfyniadau tebyg i’r rhai mae ‘Harri’, sef prif gymeriad y ddrama (sydd yn ei arddegau), a’i deulu, yn gorfod eu gwneud ond anaml iawn rydyn ni’n clywed amdanyn nhw. Rwy’n gobeithio’n fawr y bydd Tremolo yn helpu teuluoedd sy’n ystyried opsiynau profion geneteg, ac yn gwneud y broses o ddeall y dewisiadau hyn yn fwy hygyrch i’r cyhoedd yn gyffredinol.”

Roedd y fformat podlediad yn apelio at Lisa oherwydd ei fod yn golygu y gallai cynulleidfaoedd ifanc gael profiad o Tremolo mewn ffordd agos atoch, uniongyrchol. Gydag un actor yn cyflwyno’r stori, mae hi’n gobeithio y bydd yn brofiad pwerus i’r gwrandawyr:

“Roedd agosatrwydd fformat y podlediad yn apelio’n fawr ataf i – mae’r ddrama’n glanio yn ymennydd y gwrandäwr fel y gallant roi eu delweddau eu hunain i’r yr hyn sy’n digwydd. Mae’r gerddoriaeth yn gwbl ganolog i’r ddrama, ac mae’r ffaith bod y podlediad yn cael ei drosglwyddo drwy wasanaethau ffrydio poblogaidd hefyd yn apelio’n fawr ataf. Ro’n i’n awyddus i freuder Harri ddod drwyddo, a gyda’r fformat hwn mae’n siarad un-wrth-un gyda’r gwrandawyr, fel petai.”

As a national company, we are deeply aware of our role in supporting, enabling and nurturing the performance sector around us as well as offering the people of Wales the chance to connect to the stories that can unite us in shared experiences while we are kept apart. The nation of Wales is our stage.
We collaborate with people and places to make extraordinary theatre that inspires change. From the intimate to the epic, our work is powerful, brave and unexpected. Rooted in Wales, with a global outlook, we are the English-language national theatre of Wales.

We usually operate from a small base in Cardiff’s city centre, but we work all over the country and beyond, using Wales’ rich and diverse landscape, its towns, cities and villages, its incredible stories and rich talent as our inspiration.

Liberty’s speech from Catrin Dafydd’s play, Merched Caerdydd, will be performed by Lauren Connelly. This play was created as part of the 2018 Cardiff National Eisteddfod programme, before going on a Wales-wide tour with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.
