Welsh Theatre and the Climate Crisis (On Demand)

Join us for a discussion on how the Welsh theatre industry is responding to the climate emergency.

The climate crisis is the context in which we’re now making work. We can’t change that. But we can change how we make that work and what the work is. The industry is an ecosystem, connected at multiple points. By working together and learning from each other, Wales can set the bar of best practice.

Join us at Aberystwyth Arts Centre to continue that journey. Listen to stories of successes and failures, progress and challenges, and share your own thoughts and ideas of making theatre while keeping sustainability at the heart.

Young Storyteller call out

Are you 16 – 25? Are you fascinated by telling stories? Are you well-connected within your community? Then we have a great opportunity for you.

We want to meet twenty young people from across Wales looking to develop their interviewing and journalistic skills to create what we’re calling an ‘audio portrait’ – a photographic portrait accompanied by a reflective audio interview – of someone in your community.

The audio portraits will be part of an exhibition during our tour of Circle of Fifths, and will have a permanent home on our website.

A postcard from Kidstown

So what went on behind the gates at Kidstown? We followed the kids inside to take a look… Tape galore! Volcanoes erupting! A box with a new hairstyle?! See for yourself…

Circle of Fifths | Gavin Porter on working with the collective

As we head into tech rehearsals, we caught up with Gav to learn more about working with the brilliant Circle of Fifths collective. He tells us a bit about how he’s using his documentary-making processes to shape this piece of theatre..

Opening next week this will be a show that’ll make you laugh, cry, move and sing. Maybe it’ll connect you to those who live on in memory, or maybe just to each other in the here and now.

Kidstown

Come and play.

Children aged 6-11 years old are invited to Kidstown by artists Nigel & Louise with designer Amy Pitt.

Kidstown is a massive game that children make up themselves.

After being handed a passport, kids will enter the giant outdoor arena. Here, they’ll find stuff to play with, build and wear. Assistants will be on hand to help them realise their imaginings.

Grown-ups are invited to take a seat outside, relax and listen to the rolling news being broadcast of what’s happening inside.

Cariad yn Oes y Gin

A dark comedy about the experiences of a couple of young, charismatic rabble-rousers; ambitious for better prospects and longing for change in their lives.

We follow their journey from their home in rural Wales to the centre of St. Giles in the ‘underbelly’ of London, to seek their fortune in the city’s ‘Gin Craze’.

“This is a comedy about freedom. We ask the question: how far should we go to demand freedom, and do we have the right to block other people’s freedom? During a time of confinement, limitations and loss, we all test and examine our relationship with freedom, and ask who deserves freedom…and who doesn’t?” (Chris Harris).

Author: Chris Harris
Cast: Siôn Emyr and Mali O’Donnell
Directed by: Betsan Llwyd
Music: Mari Mathias

Pigeon is one in a million. At least that’s what his best friend Iola thinks. Brave, funny and a bit dangerous, there’s no one else she’d rather spend time with. But life is far from sweet.

Pigeon is desperate to escape the life that awaits him at home every night. Imagination, stories and words are the only ways he can survive. But one day, words are no longer enough. His walls come crashing down and life changes forever.

Set in the shadow of the north Wales slate quarries in the early ’90s, this is a gripping tale about growing up, the power of words, friendship and just how far people will go for love.

Based on the best-selling novel Pigeon by author Alys Conran, and adapted for the stage by Bethan Marlow. Welsh and English are subtly woven together, and every performance will use integrated captioning in both Welsh and English.

Romeo & Juliet

Here is a fully captioned version of an edit of our production of Romeo & Juliet which toured to beautiful outdoor spaces across Wales to celebrate Shakespeare’s 400th birthday. A new take on a very old tale with Taking Flight’s signature traits; exciting visual theatre with live original music and plenty of comedy.
All performances featured integrated BSL and audio description. It was lots of fun and was adored by audiences come rain or shine.
