Exploring Auto-Ethnography through Maps, Creative Writing and Collage
Facilitator: Myya Helm
28 NOVEMBER 2026
TRAMSHED TECH, CARDIFF
2PM-4PM
Where did you learn about your history? Was it taught from textbooks in school? Were you told stories at home? Was it shared with you by your community?
The purpose of this workshop is to encourage participants to think, write, and create materials about their own lives and experiences in relation to Black Welsh history (that you definitely didn’t hear about in school!). Using maps, creative writing, and collage, this workshop seeks to deepen our understanding of the past, connect you to yourself,
and foster an inclusive telling of local history for the future. No materials or expertise required!
TARGET AUDIENCE
Students, researchers, educators, practitioners, writers, artists, and community members seeking to learn something new, explore their creativity, and understand more about their individual experiences and perspectives in relation to Black Welsh history.
OBJECTIVES
Participants will critically engage with maps through personal perceptions of place and identity, apply historical thinking, practice reflexive creative writing, and collaboratively create a reflective group collage.
Event curated by Kumbukumbu, a Black Welsh history and heritage project.
