Lleuwen Steffan is a musical adventuress. She will perform The Lost Welsh Folk Hymns at Welsh chapels throughout 2024. These are the unofficial hymns of Wales, the ones that didn’t make it to the hymn books. These hymns were found in archive recordings at Sain Fagans National Museum of History. Lleuwen uses guitar and vocal layers with synths to create new music to ancient words.
Performing with the archive recordings, this work is the result of 10 years of research and collaboration with Sain Fagans National History Museum. It also includes some archive recordings from the National Library of Wales.
Lleuwen combines old words with new music to express a timeless message. She sings with voices from the past and accompanies them with various instruments. As well as the hymns, there are examples of the half-sung half-said “hwyl” preaching and memories from the 1904 revival including a wax cylinder recording of Efan Roberts the revivalist in 1905.
Pascal Lafargue from St Fagans History Museum says:
“Thanks to her talent and passion for folklore and through long and patient work she has managed to create original work with treasures that were lying idle within our archives.”
