Linda and Bethany Sutton: ‘Radiance’

Audio Description

It is an acrylic painting on canvas, the size is 20 x 16“. The painting is an abstract in portrait format. The background is a rich dark blue at the bottom fading upwards to a paler blue showing where a candle is shining. In the heart of the painting, is a large red and Naples yellow splash of vibrant colour evoking the heat and fire of the flames. These are made by wide fingermarks on the surface. The flames flash around the canvas with rich yellow and gold. Metallic gold and bronze climb up the picture spreading across the surface. Each flame has been made using imprints of a variety of leaves. There are bronze wide leaves, yellow and golden maple leaves and imprints of bamboo spiking through creating an explosion of energy. There are flecks of gold throughout and you feel the heat and power of the rebirth of creativity that is Aildanio.

Linda and Bethany Sutton are a mother and daughter team of artists. A few months ago Bethany began to show an interest in communicating through art and so their artistic journey began. They live in beautiful North Wales at the edge of the Conwy Valley. The natural surroundings; sea and mountains are their inspiration. Acrylics and mixed media are the mediums of choice that they use, often using found objects in their works.

Both Linda and Bethany live with a disability. Linda has collapses and Beth is a non-verbal, autistic artist with epilepsy. She uses her art to connect with the world and to express herself. They have a special connection.

Their artwork has been exhibited in galleries, and is in private homes. They have worked with Conwy Connect in the RCA gallery in Conwy and are often to be found at Mostyn Gallery.

This year they became part of ‘Solidarity Of Hope’ a collective group of artists with disabilities and recently have their work exhibited at the Unity festival in Llanelli south Wales.

They are hoping to produce more art works in the future.

For the Aildanio theme – they decided to produce a vibrant work in mixed media.

Linda says “we are love working together and one day had the idea of a candle reaching out into the darkness, representing a rekindling and outburst of creativity. A positive beacon of hope. In the world.” We liked the idea of using our hands to show the spreading out of hope, peace and light. We hope this shows through in the piece.
