An exciting new project which mentors gig arranging and promotion skills with young people in areas of Wales with a lack of live music has led to a gig in Carmarthen.
Mellt will headline a gig which is being held in Cwrw, Carmarthen Friday, June 24 2022, with support by Dros Dro and Bald Patch Pegi, two local bands from the area’s schools.
The gig was arranged as a pilot project between PYST, Menter Gorllewin Sir Gar and AM with support by Dydd Miwsig Cymru, with the goal of fostering and inspiring the music promoters of the future by giving them the opportunity to arrange a gig in their community.
In a series of sessions with a group of young people over the last two months, all aspects of arranging a gig were discussed, from hiring a venue to choosing artists to creating and administrating a budget. With the advice of special guests including Owain Williams (Klust, Gŵyl Newydd) and Elan Evans (Maes B, Clwb Ifor Bach, Sŵn) the young people proceeded to arrange and promote the gig, plan the budget, book the venue, contact the artists, design and create the poster, develop a marketing plan and many other responsibilities.
The hope is that this experience will inspire and impel the young people to host more gigs in the future, leading to more live Welsh music being played in different areas across the country.
According to Lea Glyn, Head of AM Content “It’s incredibly important, especially after the pandemic, that local gigs continue to bring live music to audiences across Wales. This pilot scheme proves that the next generation has the passion, enthusiasm, and skills to arrange, host and promote gigs, and I’m very eager to see similar projects being operated in different areas, ensuring that there are music promoters of the future in all corners of the country.”
