KIM HON – Milkshek

Kim Hon has become an iconic anarchic Welsh band intent on creating havoc with a scene that has become complacent in recent times. Known throughout Wales for their high-energy gigs, the band have strived to take their Welsh Psych-rock to a wider audience, with melodies and sounds that sound as boundary-smashing as they do familiar. Recently featured on BBC Three’s Paranormal with Sian Eleri (BBC Radio 1 DJ). ‘Milkshake’ appears on the band’s self-titled debut album, released in November 2023 on Recordiau Côsh.

Modulate Last Shout Commissions

Last Shout For Six Of The Best
We are really pleased to announce that six new commissions have been allocated to six young disabled musicians from Disability Arts Cymru’s Modulate panel. The six chosen represent four songwriting/ recording projects, one video project and one podcasting project. Each of them will be addressing their experience of being a disabled creative in today’s society and their personal, sometimes painful, sometimes funny, experiences. They are all impressively accomplished young musicians and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Four of the projects will be showcased in a sharing event on 06/06/24 at 18:00 with BSL interpretation by Claire Anderson.

PARADE
“The centre of the City is where the old monuments are, but not, for the most part, people’s lives…..” Guido Guidi.
PARADE: by John Meirion Rea
A stereo audio-visual interpretation taken from an original immersive multi-media installation, commissioned by Maindee Library, and The Arts Council of Wales.
My creative work is inspired by the voices of the people of Wales. My focus has been on the melodic nature, and textures of diverse dialects and languages; particularly our native Welsh and Anglo-Welsh dialects, and how they are mirrored in, and defined by our environment.
I spent time in Maindee, Newport, where I met and listened to people’s stories, alongside cinematographer and photographer Huw Talfryn Walters. Having got to know many of those who live, work and worship there, and capturing hours of film, interviews, and responding to its sounds, I presented this vérité material both as a site-specific immersive installation: a collective experience sited in the community; and as an online portal: a more intimate ‘one-to-one’ relationship.
The truths and realities that emerge, seen collectively, convey a strong sense of place, and what it means to belong, and the reality of living in urban South-East Wales. It is a snapshot of life in Maindee, as we encountered it in 2019.
CONCRÈTE: Site-Specific Installation and performance work.
An interview with John Rea.
Concrète is a site-specific sound and musical work, inspired by the theme of ‘Revolution’ as part of Ffotogallery’s Diffusion Festival, in 2017.
I created a surround, multi-room sound work, based on the introduction of noise into the world of music, inspired by the early work of the Futurists, and Constructivists, also the utopian ideals of the early makers of synthesizers in the eastern Block.
The work was introduced as a one-off performance celebrating noise and the origins of sounscape, utilising modular synthesizers, mainpulated spoken word, archival, and specially recorded elements, presented immersively, and as a site-specific installation work thereafter.
Atgyfodi (vb revive, vb resurrect). Arthur Morris Roberts and Capel Celyn.
A section from the Atgyfodi project featuring local field recordings from Tryweryn Valley, and an interview with local farmer Arthur Morris Roberts, who witnessed Capel Celyn being drowned as a young boy.
Atgyfodi combines live performance, film and sonic installation inspired by the sound and image archives of St Fagans National Museum of History. The work features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and Patrick Rimes and Cass Meurig on traditional Welsh instruments.
It was performed, alongside site-specific sound installations, in the Museum on October the 19th, 20th and 21st, 2018, also as part of Ffotogallery’s Sight & Sound themed Diffusion and Green Man Festivals in 2019.
The original version is an immersive work, mixed in 5.1 surround.
Atgyfodi (vb revive, vb resurrect). Tyrone O’Sullivan and Tower Colliery
Section of the work Atgyfodi, that features an interview with Tyrone O’Sullivan of the iconic Tower Colliery – a modern Welsh hero. In the interview he speaks very personally about how he recognized men in the darkness of the pits by their voices.
I combine field recorded abstract sound, with archive and interview in this section, alongside a composed response. It is combined with the original Welsh dialect of the South Wales Valleys ‘Y Wenhwyseg’, taken from a recording from the sound archive of The National Museum of Welsh History.

GRIEF
A feeling felt by many but spoken about by few.
GRIEF paints the picture of the pages and stages that we go through when encountering the many aspects that make up grief. Through original music composed by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, movement choreographed and performed by Arnold Matsena, and spoken word written and performed by Connor Allen, GRIEF explores the impact of loss from the perspective of the body. It is an intimate, physical exploration of continually grappling with the residual energy and volatility of emotion that accompany grieving.
interbeing
interbeing, a term coined by Zen master and peace activist, Thich Nhat Hanh, articulates the interconnected existence of all things. Drawing from this term, this project is an experimental operatic collage, offering provocations that explore humanity’s relationship with land and more specifically how our actions are impacting the environment. It suggests that everything exists in a state of interconnected being, interwoven and mutually dependent. Employing the physical connection between land and body as a visual and sonic motif, this opera serves both as a call to action and an offering.
