Cronfa Fideos Cerddorol: tu ôl i’r llen efo Sachasom a Pypi Slysh // Music Video Fund: behind the scenes with Sachasom and Pypi Slysh

Back in March we announced our Music Video Fund in collaboration with Lŵp – 10 x £500 to be awarded to artists and directors performing in Welsh at the start of their careers.
The first to receive funding was the experiemental artist from Machynlleth, Izak Zjalic, aka Sachasom, who pitched an idea in collaboration with exciting upandcoming production company Pypi Slysh (Sam Stevens & Sion Teifi Rees). On the process of creating the video, Izak shared:
“Creating the video with Sam and Sion from Pypi Slysh was a unique process- shot in a fairly impromptu style, based on the original idea and was inspired by the film Climax by Gaspar Noe. Although the video for ‘Agor’ is quite abstract, through the different images and symbols, there is a narrative that follows my experiences in the creative process of making music, moving from the purity of creation for enjoyment, to aspects I inherited through reading about ‘hauntology’ philosophy and the worries of growing up. This is an internal struggle that is being presented over my album Yr Offerynnols Uffernoliadaus! – which aims to promote the idea of creating music that is natural to you and not to follow anyone else’s agenda. The video was filmed over two locations, an old house that burned down, The Vaults in Cardiff Bay, and at BEWT Studios. ”
The video for ‘Agor’, directed by Sam Stevens, is out on the same day as the single, 8th July. Until then, here’s a few pictures from behind the scenes.

Song of the Trees

A unique symphony led by the rainforests of Wales.
Launching for the Summer Solstice 2022, CÂN Y COED Rainforest Symphony empowers a new voice for our fragile ecology, inviting audiences to connect with the environment through a unique collaboration with nature, where for the first time, the rainforests of Wales sing out from beneath the bark. Hearing impaired, environmental sound artist and composer Cheryl Beer, has spent the last year working with the ancient rainforests of Wales, composing music led by the vascular systems of four remaining fragile enclaves. Her work reunites ancient Celtic grounds that would once have been joined together under the soil, by the fine feathery threads of mycelium fungus, as one magnificent rainforest.
By repurposing hearing aid and sensitive biomedical sound equipment, Cheryl has collated biorhythms created by conductivity deep within trees, ferns and moss, using these readings to compose CÂN Y COED Rainforest Symphony, unearthing previously unheard conversations within nature, where every note played is led by the ancient trees, fern and moss, themselves. Through her ground breaking arts & technology fusion, Cheryl’s unique way of composing music is raising awareness of our globally significant eco-system

PYST MEWN MIS: Mai

May was another busy month for PYST – 19 albums, 1 EPs and 21 singles in total. Here’s a full list of May’s releases distributed through PYST.
Rhyddheir ‘Cysgod Mis Hydref’ gan Candelas ddydd Gwener 27ain o Fai ar I KA CHING.

Mae Candelas yn dal eu gafael yn dynn ar eu teitl hirsefydlog o fod yn un o fandiau amlycaf Cymru. Rhyddheir ‘Mae’n Amser / We Think It’s Time’ y llynedd, cyn rhyddhau fersiwn newydd o’r eiconig ‘Y Gwylwyr’ (gyda Nest Llewelyn) eleni fel rhan o gasgliad amlgyfrannog I KA CHING. Yn dychwelyd gydag anthem arall i’w casgliad, mae ‘Cysgod Mis Hydref’ yn ddigyfaddawd o drwm ac yn sicr o aros yn y co’.
Mae ‘Cysgod Mis Hydref’ yn gân serch glwyddog sy’n gweld prif-leisydd y band, Osian Huw Williams, yn hiraethu am y teimlad cynnes o fod mewn cariad. Wrth iddo fyfyrio ar gysgodion tywyll y gaeaf, flagurodd y gytgan — ‘Un noson ac mae’r ysfa yn ôl, fatha creu tân oer yn y gaeaf. Dy weld di’n gorwedd fel cysgod mis Hydref, yn nefoedd mewn noson o haf’.
Wedi ei chyfarwyddo a’i saethu gan yr artist Rhys Grail, mae fideo ‘Cysgod Mis Hydref’ yn gasgliad deng-mlynedd o gigs Candelas ac yn deyrnged i ddathliadau deng mlwyddiant label I KA CHING. Gwyliwch ‘Cysgod Mis Hydref’ am y tro cyntaf yma

Dyddiadur SXSW: Taith Cara Hammond i Austin, Texas
SXSW Video Diaries: Cara Hammond’s journey to Austin, Texas
In March 2022, 6 artists from Wales headed to Austin, Texas for the international showcasing festival SXSW. Following a break in international showcasing during Covid-19, for many of the artists, this was their first opportunity to take part in one of the biggest festivals in the calendar. One of those artists was Cara Hammond, who was heading to the US for the first time ever to perform at the Focus Wales showcase, as well as many others. Supported by PRS Foundation’s International Showcase Fund, in partnership with Wales Arts International, Cara performed at several showcases and shared her experiences with us as she discovered the city and festival for the very first time.

Adwaith – Wedi Blino
Following on from the soaring melodies of euphoric opening single ‘ETO’, latest cut ‘Wedi Blino’ cranks up the fuzz and digs deeper into the anxieties of your early 20’s. Their eagerly anticipated sophomore album Bato Mato, due 1st July via Libertino. “We wanted to create a big indie pop song that has a melancholy feel to it” say the band. “It’s about being worried that life is going too fast or the worries of a relationship, the overwhelming feeling that you’re not good enough and that you are the reason things aren’t working out.”
Cronfa Fideos Cerddorol
Music videos are a creative springboard that provide an important platform for artists and directors to share their vision and tell stories beyond the music. This new £5,000 fund (£500 per video) aims to give 10 artists and directors at the start of their career to create a music video of an artist or band performing in Welsh.
The fund is funded by Lŵp, S4C, and managed by PYST, and directors, artists or labels can apply. The lucky artists and directors will be selected on the basis of their creativity, vision, music release plan / schedule and enthusiasm for contributing to the musical and creative community of Wales. We are eager to support talent from under-represented and disadvantaged groups and these factors will be part of our selection criteria.
To apply, please contact post@pyst.net for further details

FOCUS Wales 2022!
Maniffest / Hijinx
Members of Hijinx Academy and National Youth Theatre of Wales (NYTW) recently returned to live in-person theatre devising, as they co-created a new inclusive work in partnership. Coming together in-person for the first time since the start of social distancing restrictions, the 8 young people took part in a four-day project full of creativity and stagecraft. Under the guidance of Ben Pettit-Wade (Creative Director, Hijinx), cast members developed an original piece of theatre based upon the ideas and stories suggested by the members themselves.

Papur Wal – Nôl ac yn Ôl
‘Nôl ac yn ôl’ yw’r sengl olaf i gael ei thynnu oddi ar albwm gyntaf hynod lwyddianus Papur Wal, ‘Amser Mynd Adra’.
“Cân am bryderon dechrau perthynas newydd yw hi. Nid yw bob amser yn hawdd, ac yn aml mae sialensau ar hyd y ffordd. Fe’i hysgrifennwyd ar ôl nosweithiau di-gwsg gan fod ffenest yr ystafell wely wedi torri, ac mae’n gofyn am y llwch cysgu yr oedd fy nhad yn arfer ei roi i ni pan oeddem yn blant i’n helpu ni gysgu. Mae’n fath o gydnabyddiaeth o’r cylch bywyd a all eich neud i chi deimlo’n isel, yn enwedig yn eich 20au, gan ofni y byddwch yn colli blynyddoedd gorau eich bywyd ynghyd a cholli anwyliaid. Ond mae bywyd yn mynd yn ei flaen.”
I gyd fynd a rhyddhau ‘Nôl ac yn ôl’ mae’r band wedi recordio ochr B ‘Anghofia dy hun’. Fydd y ddwy yn cael ei rhyddhau ar Ddydd Llun y 22ain o Ebrill.
