Chwalaw – Dim Arwyr

‘Dim Arwyr’ (No Heores) is a song about how the stories we have grown up with as children idolised the male hero archetype, and how we don’t want to hear those tales anymore – Izzy and Efa’s lyrics express that they want to hear about the women, witches and anti-patriarchal legends. The violin melody comes from an old Sorbian song called Budzer.

Efa Supertramp, Izzy Rabey and Cerys Hafana appear in the video in wedding dresses in a forest. The three musicians wander through the forest in a sort of queer feminist fantasy that ends with smoke and mud. Izzy was chosen to direct the video, with Gabi Norland filming and directing the photography. Izzy explained where his inspiration came from “Within the context of the video I drew inspiration from Courtney Love’s videos in his band Hole in the 90s and the work of the 70s Punk band The Slits – the joy, enjoyment and power that is unlocked by not sticking to Welsh legendary female stereotypes. Embrace the ugly on power that is within us all!”

Efa explained how the song came into being during a residency with Sorbian artists, “We discussed a lot about how so many of our traditions (Welsh and Sorbian) are patriarchal and so we wanted to create a different future for our languages and cultures – feminist and queer futures. Paul Geigerzähler put down the violin melody (from a traditional Sorbian song) and then Nick looped it and built the track from there. The words of the original folk song ‘Budzer’ were unhealthy, so that was the inspiration – from us just thinking about all the strong people who have existed in the past and how their stories have been forgotten and lost. So we sent the song to Izzy to see if she wanted to rap on it”.

Izzy added, “The Mabinogion always portray women as individuals who need to be saved, “pure”, victims of trauma and putting off their potential husbands and potential husbands. For me, the portrayal here as women as victims plays into how music and the Welsh arts portray women. For this song, I wanted to talk about the power to be found in celebrating your complexity, of being a witch rather than a princess and how deeply legends can play into how we see femme people today. ”

Pererin Wyf / Is Oilithreach Mé / I am a Pilgrim

Pererin Wyf / Is oilithreach mé / I am a pilgrim: sounding the way back through story and song is a participatory arts project seeking to connect with the Welsh and Irish diaspora with particular reference to Pembrokeshire and Wexford and a new cross-border pilgrimage connecting Ferns and St Davids.

The project takes its title and inspiration from an 18th century hymn by the prolific Welsh hymn writer William Williams Pantycelyn.

The song widely known in Wales and beyond through the Welsh diaspora will be familiar to a great many other people around the globe as it is mostly sung to the tune of Amazing Grace.

This project is inviting people wherever they are in the world to sing this song, a version of this song or any song which has the power to ‘call you back home’ and to pin that recording to an online map.

The project has been developed by artist Rowan O’Neill and is being co-facilitated by Wexford based, Irish artists Rachel Uí Fhaoláin from Ceol Mo Chroí and John Ó Faoláin from Traditional Archive Channel and West Wales based digital artist Jacob Whittaker. Coding by Alan Cameron Wills.

Pererin Wyf is part of the Ancient Connections project funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Co-operation Programme.

Forté Records

The Forté project is a ground-breaking talent development model that helps shape the next wave of music professionals in Wales by offering mentoring, masterclasses, training and plenty of various opportunities to boost the profile of music and musicians from Wales.

Their alumni include a long list of artists who have gone on to do great things, including two of the most recent Triskel Award Winners, Aderyn and Minas; Canton rockers CVC, who are about to tour their critically-acclaimed album across the UK; and valleys trio Chroma, who will soon jet off to SXSW in Texas.

Weeks after announcing their Forté 10 for 2022-23, Forté staff, friends and alumni gathered in Porter’s on the 30th of January to celebrate 8 years of the project AND to hear the announcement that they will be launching their own record label.

“We’re thrilled to be working alongside PYST in the creation of Forté Records” says Alexandra Jones from Forté, “It feels like a natural step that will breathe new life into the project. Forté Records aims to support artists in the Welsh Music Industry by lessening barriers surrounding the releasing of music.”

Not only will Forté’s new label give platform to the artists on their 2022-23 roster to release upcoming project, but will also aim to release projects by Forté alumni and non-affilited artists in Wales, all with aim of lifting artists in Wales to new heights.

PYST are very excited to be working alongside Forté to distribute their music this exciting new venture. Keep your eyes peeled on PYST and Forté Project socials for future announcements.
