Kamalagita Hughes is a Welsh-language storyteller whose work moves between performance, community, and place. A regular performer, she has worked as a community storyteller for Beyond the Border and the National Eisteddfod, and has toured with her own show, ‘Carrying Clecs’. Her storytelling often grows directly from the community itself—through projects like ‘Clecs Cwmparc’, an oral history project created in partnership with a local community hall to mark its 150th anniversary, weaving the residents’ own memories and voices into the narrative.
Alongside performing, Kamalagita draws on years of Buddhist study and practice, bringing a quality of presence and mindfulness to her storytelling that goes beyond mere entertainment. As Dr Phil George, CBE, former Chair of the Arts Council of Wales, said of her work: “Imagine a hall or theatre where this compelling, friendly figure steps out and tells stories that make you feel you are hearing your own story. And crucially, with these stories in our imaginations, we can journey into the future together. Our confidence and wellbeing will be enormously enriched.”
Her storytelling is rooted in the belief that a good story is not merely a form of entertainment—it holds up a mirror, allows an audience to recognize something of themselves, and offers a shared way of looking towards the future together. Whether performing on a festival stage, touring independently, or gathering memories in a village hall, Kamalagita brings warmth, craftsmanship, and deep respect to the voices she conveys.
