In a discussion chaired by Songlines Editor Jo Frost, ShoShona Kish of Digging Roots (Canada) Lisa Jên of 9Bach (Wales), Gareth Bonello The Gentle Good (Wales), Brìghde Chaimbeul (Scotland) talk about colonisation, climate change, music and indigenous languages in the context of Covid-19, and look ahead to UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages.
Produced by Neuadd Ogwen and in association with Neuadd Ogwen’s new festival of indigenous languages, Gŵyl Mawr y Rhai Bychain, and the World Music Pan-Indigenous Network .
It is two years since ShoShona Kish won the Professional Excellence Award at WOMEX 18, and here in Wales we continue to be moved and inspired by the powerful speech she made when she accepted the award.
WOMEX 18 also saw the inaugural meeting of the World Music Pan-Indigenous Network and looked ahead to the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019: these events are fibres of the thread with which new narratives are being woven for Wales and the world today.
This video is part of Wales at WOMEX 2020. There are 3 artists showcasing as part of Horizons at WOMEX this year: The Gentle Good, N’famady Kouyaté and Lisa Jên from 9Bach.
