Watch me Grow – Aneia Duller

Literature

Watch me grow 1000 years
Thrive as a nursery
I’ve seen growth
I’ve seen death
Watch back on my life
Like an ever-changing time-lapse
I’ve travelled through time
A giant who never broke a sweat
Rooted to the ground
But my true call of life
Is to care for those around me
326 forms of life
Depend on me
I am a mother and a father
I will care for you

But now in death how do I protect life?
My true calling has faltered
Now whispers in the wind
Let me be ready Earth
For you to be rid of me
But how can I bring myself
To let all these lives,
Flora and fauna,
Who have lived a mere centimetre of my life, be lost?

Now I have grown old,
My beautiful waxy green leaves and acorns
Never born again
But still life goes on
I am the warrior of my own world
I can handle the mad growing of lichen and fungi,
The ridiculously annoying tapping of a woodpecker.
Throw whatever you can grab at me world
Watch me grow
Travel through time
Find my true calling
I can share my life
Even through death
I will be oak.
