1. What is your llais y lle project about?
I live in Grangetown and was interested in increasing awareness of the Welsh language there and in Butetown. I wanted to engage with the community to understand if there were barriers to learning Welsh and to know how many people could speak the language – to any level.
2. What were the highlights?
I was fortunate to work on elements of this project with Vivian Rhule, and one of the highlights was attending last year’s summer Butetown Carnival.
Vivian and I chatted with the community about their understanding of the Welsh language and provided sensory items to promote it.
3. What were the results?
At the start of the carnival, people were certain that they could not speak Welsh, but after some persuasion, they were surprised that they had an understanding and could speak the language. The conversations were positive and emotional.
We wanted to promote the idea that knowing a few Welsh words still means the language belongs to them. A few were inspired to think about the language for the first time, which was very valuable.
