Cymru yn Ewrop: Gethin Wyn Jones

Artist: Gethin Wyn Jones, Stockholm (Sweden)

This is the second film from our Cymru in Ewrop project, which supports Welsh artists in Europe and celebrates what Wales has to offer on the European stage.

The context of Gethin’s film is important, with a nod to Andy Warhol’s ‘Empire’ from 1964. Instead of the Empire State Building in New York, the focus here is the large neon sign of Hagsätra, filmed from the artist’s bedroom at summer solstice. Hagsätra is a multicultural suburb in the south of Stockholm, and for years the sign was out of action. It has very recently been repaired and illuminates and spins once again above the rooftops.

Gethin Wyn Jones is a Welsh artist who lives in Stockholm. Originally from Bangor, he studied Fine Art in Bath Spa University before completing a Masters Degree at Northumbria University, during which he spent time as a guest student at the Kungl.Konsthgskolan, Stockholm in 2015. He’s lived in the city ever since.
