Rufus Mufasa

Artist of the Month is a feature where we put the spotlight on the incredible work of one of our members.

Our Artist of the Month for March is Rufus Mufasa, a pioneering participatory artist, literary activist, poet, rapper, singer songwriter, theatre maker, and last but not least, Mother.

From Barbican Fellow to the first Future Generations Act Poet in Residence, Rufus also works internationally, securing literary residencies from Hay Literature Festival to Sweden, Finland, Indonesian, and Zimbabwe, but always returns to People Speak Up in Llanelli, Wales, promoting hip hop education, performance poetry and intergenerational development, and was appointed their Poet on Prescription 2021. A Hull ’19 artist in conjunction with BBC Contains Strong Language, Flashbacks and Flowers is her debut collection, published by Indigo Dreams, awarded for their innovation in publishing and Rufus won the International Poetry Award 2022 for this. Rufus’ work explores motherhood, the spirituality of ancestry, class, climate chaos, transgenerational trauma, the divine & the domestic, feminism & faith.

Tri(ger) Warning(s) and Swynwraig

Critically acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Rufus Mufasa (Flashbacks & Flowers 2021, both stranger & of this place 2019, Coracle Europe Slam Champ 2023) releases their hybrid hip hop album Tri(ger) Warning(s) launching new Record Label Swynwraig. Calling rank from the peripheries, exploring key word theories & indigenous languages, this is reminder to keep moving, keep making, keep kicking back, keep calling it out.

Tri(ger) Warning(s) is a bilingual album, exploring trauma & transformation. Named after the closing poetry sequence from critically acclaimed Flashbacks & Flowers, giving us the story up to the summer 2019, the album journeys through what then follows.

The work explores identity & language, and each album track (10 in total) carries a Welsh language key word.

10 female artists from around Wales each took a word to explore in their chosen art form. An exhibition opened at GS Artists Gallery Swansea and the exhibition invited us to consider the unlocking of barriers when presenting key words of our times & re-imagine access & inclusion within the arts.
