1919 Race Riots Walking Tour

Communities

We are delighted to invite you to the latest bilingual walk about race riots on Saturday 25th October, 2025.

Over 100 years ago, Cardiff saw the worst riots in the history of Britain, with at least three dead- and many more deported to the British Empire. Muhammad Abdullah was just 20 years old when he was killed during the riots. For three days, Cardiff was ablaze, with the influence of the riots still felt in the psychogeography of Cardiff.

There are no plaques or memorials to remember the events of 1919, but those same themes of racism, empire, riots and sanctuary are as relevant today as they were in 1919.

The tour will start in the centre of Cardiff and end in Cardiff Bay, investigating the complex social and economic conditions of the post-WWI era that led to widespread racist violence. We will examine key historical historical sites and accounts to honour the experiences and resilience of our communities affected by these events, shedding light on a pivotal moment in the history of race relations in Wales and the UK.

The tour will conclude with a special event with speakers and food.

Join us later this month on Saturday 25th October at 2pm, where we’ll have catered reception, speakers, and a short archival film screening.
