“Nora at the Window” – task set by Paul Davies
NOTES FROM THE INTERIOR
We’ve enlisted the help of some brilliant actors to keep ideas, improvisation and inspiration pinging around the virtual studio, in a format designed for theatre and drama students (and anyone else who wants to) to join in and get creating some encounters as yet unknown. Director Paul Davies will set a weekly challenge based on a passage of text or other stimulus, experienced devising performers such as Mairi Phillips, Neal McWilliams, Christopher Elson and Rebecca Smith-Williams will self-tape a short (up to 2-minute) response to the challenge, and then the floor is open. Play just to challenge yourself, or send us your responses. Be silly, be serious, be spontaneous, be fearless, be imaginative – be there! Tasks are released weekly here, on Volcano’s social media channels, and on their website.
If you wish, you can send your video response to us HERE and we will make a fully-credited compilation of all responses at the end of the project. Alternatively, you may want to use a free file transfer service such as www.wetransfer.com. You can respond to any of the tasks at any time during the project.

Art as Social Change in Rural Wales.
SPAN is a vibrant community arts organisation with a 30 year history of making a significant contribution to the arts in Pembrokeshire. We work with volunteers, artists, performers and producers to create projects and experiences that enrich the lives of people living in rural areas, improve health and wellbeing, reduce loneliness and isolation, combat barriers to accessing services, tackle the impact of second home ownership and contribute to the digital inclusion agenda in Wales. We are ambitious for the arts in Pembrokeshire to inspire & connect rural people, places and communities creatively and seek to challenge perceptions of what rural communities are capable of and what they can achieve when they work together.

Our Name –
Our name comes from a conversation between the comedian Billy Connolly and former Scottish trade union leader Jimmy Reid. At Reid’s funeral in 2010 Connolly stated;
“I remember him saying that if you look at these housing estates and high-rise flats – look at all the windows. Behind every one of these windows is somebody who might be a horse-jumping champion, a formula one racing champion, a yachtsman of great degree, but he’ll never know because he’ll never step on a yacht or formula one car – he’ll never get the chance.”
Connolly said those words still haunted him to this day.
