Meilyr Rhys

Growing up in Dyffryn Nantlle, I’ve always had an interest in people – the way a person forms their personality is extremely interesting to me. I see film as a good way of researching into people whilst telling stories. It also brings recognition and representation to people that wouldn’t have it usually. I lose myself in the portraits that emerge in storytelling, like Samuel Northup trying to escape his enslavement in 12 Years a Slave, and Reynolds Woodcock struggling to come to terms with his mother’s death in Phantom Thread. Film techniques also excite me; from cinematography to score, film is an amalgamation of all forms of art. When all of these forms come together perfectly, there is nothing better.

I’m a filmmaker who has just finished his second year studying film at the University of Bristol.
