On March 27-28 AM along with the Welsh Books Council, will be hosting PRINT – a weekend of celebrating and supporting Welsh magazines.
It’s too often that the variety of magazines in Wales do not get the attention they deserve: especially in these challenging times. PRINT’s purpose therefore, is to celebrate the diversity and existence of our magazines in Wales through hosting a weekend that will feature special digital items as well as an opportunity to subscribe to receive and support these magazines. PRINT will continue after the weekend as a permanent channel on AM which will be a convenient one-stop shop to subscribe to any of the Welsh magazines.
PRINT will be celebrating and including work from Cylchgrawn Cara, New Welsh Review, O’r Pedwar Gwynt, Llen Natur, Golwg, Wales Art Review, Lingo Newydd, WCW a’i ffrindiau, Y Cymru Planet Magazine, Llafar Gwlad, Y Wawr, Poetry Wales, Welsh Agenda, Cylchgronau’r Urdd – Cip, Bore Da, IAW, Cristion a Lucent Dreaming.
Arwel Jones, Head of Publishing Grants for Book Council of Wales said:
The Welsh Book Council of Wales are proud to support 26 different magazines in Welsh and English, in print and digitally in a number of different fields. We are very grateful to AM for providing this platform for Welsh magazines. Unlike books, there is rarely an opportunity to celebrate the Welsh magazines that are such an integral part of our culture and civic life. Even in the age of social media, magazines have a key role in stimulating discussion and developing space for ideas.
Alun Llwyd, AM Chief Executive added
“Publishing a regular magazine during the pandemic has been a triumph that has not received its due attention. Creating an opportunity to highlight this, to enjoy some of the great content of Welsh magazines and to encourage people to subscribe to them is important. ”
PRINT’s brand was created by the graphic designer and artist, Ela Mars. Ela studied Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University and she now works as a full time designer for Golwg, designing Golwg, Lingo Newydd and WCW a’i Ffrindiau. In her spare time, Ela creates print work and branding projects commissioned by clients as Ela Mars Design.
Siân Powell from Cwmni Golwg said:
“Golwg is delighted to be able to take part in PRINT. It has been a challenging year to continue to produce magazines let alone sell them, but through the challenging times there are opportunities to reach new audiences. In a time where independent voices and independent journalism are becoming more important than ever before to scrutinise, entertain and inspire – PRINT is very timely. Hopefully AM’s audience will enjoy browsing the wealth of magazines available in Wales and discover something new. ”
Emily Trahair, Planet: the Welsh Internationalist: Editor said:
“We are delighted to accept the invitation to participate in AM’s PRINT weekend in collaboration with the Books Council of Wales. While our subscriptions have been flourishing under lockdown, the pandemic has obviously impacted severely on shop sales, and we currently don’t have the opportunity to sell the magazine at events, so such imaginative endeavours on the part of AM to support an independent Welsh print media through digital platforms are really valued and appreciated.”
PRINT will be available on the website and AM app – www.amam.cymru / download the app from Apple Stores and Google Play.
