SEREN MORGAN JONES – MABINOGION [rhan 1]

TEN are pleased to present MABINOGION [rhan un] by Seren Morgan Jones, a body of 8 new paintings that re-imagine the femmes of the Mabinogi and Welsh folklore.
This exhibition sees Morgan Jones take inspiration from her grandmother’s iconic illustrations of the Mabinogion. Margaret Jones’s illustrations were published as part of Gwyn Thomas’s 1980’s adaption of the tales – illustrations that are such an integral part of the visual language of Wales. Once again, Morgan Jones’s distinctive approach to her subject is exceptional, coupled with further development of her painting style.

MABINOGION [rhan un] – “the stories of the Mabinogi have always been a part of my world. The copy of the book my grandmother [Margaret Jones] illustrated has always been around and those drawings and paintings ignited my imagination from a very early age. On a trip back to celebrate her 100th birthday in January 2019 I had the chance to look through her portfolio and I realised I wanted to create my own tribute to the influence her work has had on my own imagination.
It is believed that the stories of the Mabinogi as well as being used for entertainment were also meant to inform the listener [and later readers] on how best to conduct themselves in all manner of different real world social situations. And so over the centuries these stories would have been updated by the storytellers to reflect the times. With this body of work I hope to create my contemporary version of the femmes of the Mabinogi.” – Seren Morgan Jones
