After sitting on an ever-growing collection of songs for some time, Cyn Cwsg (Tomos Lynch, Obed Powell-Davies and Gwion Ifor) start the new year with a brand new double single in the form of ‘Asgwrn Newydd’ and ‘Lôn Gul’. The songs are described by the band as melodic tracks that capture the fun of recording with producer, Sywel Nyw, in South London at the end of summer 2023.
“We happened to be down in London during a scorching heatwave one weekend and I think the fun in that – going for a lot of breaks in the sun, putting down takes quickly and throwing different influences around the room – comes over in the songs”. Some of those influences date back to the 70s, with the honesty of the lyrics of ‘Asgwrn Newydd’ drawing on Gilbert O’Sullivan’s love songs, while the warm harmonies of ‘Lôn Gul’ are an attempt to go “all out Hergest” as the band explain.
Cyn Cwsg have also been working closely with film director, Aled Victor, on a video described as “a tongue in cheek tribute to tens of late nights watching clips from The Beatles’ rooftop concert while at university in Aberystwyth,” as the band perform on a flat balcony in Cardiff. The video, which has been funded by Lŵp x PYST Music Video Fund, will be shown before the film Lisa Frankenstein at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff every night between the 8-14th March, ahead of its digital premiere on Klust music website the following week.
Cyn Cwsg’s double single will be released via UNTRO on Friday 8th March.
