Rubicon Dance Company: Triple Bill

22/09/22

19:30

Tickets – £16, concessions – £13, groups of 10+ – £10

Each piece is 20 minutes with a 15 minute interval between each

Everyone will love this sizzling dance programme with its high-octane performances from 8 of Wales’ most exciting dancers.

This Autumn Rubicon Dance Company premieres an exhilarating new show that draws on the highs and lows of the human experience delivered with compelling physicality and skilful storytelling that people will immediately identify with.

We have all been through a lot in recent years and in truth we don’t quite know what the future holds. After so long apart, with few chances to come together for shared moments like this, you won’t want to miss the chance to experience this brilliant live performance and a thoroughly great night out.

Rubicon’s TRIPLE BILL takes you on a journey through the past, present and future and draws inspiration from science fiction, the inside of a therapy room and the boisterous antics of a group of pub regulars.

Read-Only Memory imagines a distant future in which society subverts technology to control and punish its citizens. Choreographed by Jamiel Laurence, Read-Only Memory draws us into an authoritarian regime where affection is outlawed and must be cracked down upon. The result is heart breaking.

24HR lays bare the mental health crisis with incredible athleticism and features a poignant Welsh language soundscape. Choreographer, Anna Watkins’ honesty is both emotional and cathartic and many will recognise how difficultit can be to ask for help.

High Jinks by Marcus Jarrell Willis is a joyful celebration set in the pub somewhere in the 1930s where a group of friends tease each other, fancy each other, play jokes and generally enjoy each other’s company. High Jinks harks back to a simpler time of best nights and great times. With precise choreography, wit and extraordinary musicality High Jinks is an instant classic and vintage Marcus.

Bruch Kol Nidrei

Fazil Say Never Give Up [UK Premiere | Premiere y DU]

Fabien Waksman Protonic Games [UK Premiere | Premiere y DU]

Beethoven Symphony No. 7 | Symffoni Rhif 7

Nil Venditti conductor | arweinydd

Camille Thomas cello | soddgrwth

ENERGETIC |INVENTIVE | ROUSING | WELSH

Bruch’s warm and richly evocative Kol Nidrei takes its inspiration from traditional Jewish melody. Although not Jewish himself, Bruch had strong links to the community and makes masterful use of the solo cello to depict the cantor in the melody of Kol Nidrei, a declaration recited at Yom Kipper, alongside the Hebrew melodies of ‘O Weep for Those that wept on Babel’s Stream’. Also putting the cello to inventive use, Fazil Say’s concerto Never Give Up is a strong political statement about the harrowing terror of attacks in Europe and Turkey, and the need for freedom and peace. Harsh percussive motifs jar with screeching woodwind passages to depict the horrors, before concluding more optimistically with birdsong, waves and traditional Turkish rhythms.

Fascinated with the way Beethoven takes a micro-motif and turns it into a great masterpiece, along with an interest in particle physics and the way high energy collisions behave, Fabien Waksman’s Protonic Games takes seven motifs from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and uses these as the particles which collide and transform. An explosive opening gives way to a melting chorale, before journeying through to an ecstatic solar chord finish. Given Waksman’s homage to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, it is only fitting that we conclude this concert with the original masterpiece that is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Mae Kol Nidrei cyfareddol ac atgofus Bruch yn cael ei ysbrydoli gan alaw Iddewig draddodiadol. Er nad oedd yn Iddew ei hun, roedd gan Bruch gysylltiadau cryf â’r gymuned ac mae’n gwneud defnydd meistrolgar o’r unawd soddgrwth i ddarlunio’r cantor yn alaw Kol Nidrei, datganiad wedi’i adrodd yn Yom Kipper, ochr yn ochr â’r alawon Hebraeg ‘O Weep for Thers that wept on Babel’s Stream’. Mae concerto Fazil Say, Never Give Up, hefyd yn gwneud defnydd dyfeisgar o’r soddgrwth mewn ddatganiad gwleidyddol cryf am arswyd dychrynllyd ymosodiadau yn Ewrop a Thwrci, a’r angen am ryddid a heddwch. Mae nodau caled offerynnau taro wedi’u plethu â sgrechiadau’r chwythbrennau yn darlunio’r erchyllterau, cyn cloi’n fwy obeithiol gyda chân adar, tonnau a rhythmau traddodiadol Twrcaidd.

Wedi’i ysgogi gan y ffordd y mae Beethoven yn cymryd micro-motiff ac yn ei droi’n gampwaith gwych, ynghyd â diddordeb mewn ffiseg gronynnau a’r ffordd y mae gwrthdrawiadau egni uchel yn ymddwyn, mae Protonic Games Fabien Waksman yn cymryd saith motif o Seithfed Symffoni Beethoven ac yn defnyddio’r rhain fel gronynnau sy’n gwrthdaro ac yn trawsnewid. Mae’r agoriad ffrwydrol yn ildio i gorawl sy’npylu, cyn cloi gyda chord solar ecstatig. O gofio teyrnged Waksman i Seithfed symffoni Beethoven, mae’n gwbl briodol ein bod yn cloi’r cyngerdd hwn gyda’r campwaith gwreiddiol, sef Symffoni Rhif 7 Beethoven.
